Still, on her seventeenth birthday, Nyx abandons everything she's ever known to marry the all-powerful, immortal Ignifex. Her plan? Seduce him, destroy his enchanted castle, and break the nine-hundred-year-old curse he put on her people.
But Ignifex is not at all what Nyx expected. The strangely charming lord beguiles her, and his castle—a shifting maze of magical rooms—enthralls her.
As Nyx searches for a way to free her homeland by uncovering Ignifex's secrets, she finds herself unwillingly drawn to him. Even if she could bring herself to love her sworn enemy, how can she refuse her duty to kill him? With time running out, Nyx must decide what is more important: the future of her kingdom, or the man she was never supposed to love.
Review
This is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, which I hoped to be very good and which turned to be not for me.
The beginning is quite promising. Nyx, our MC, and the narrator isn't a fan of her family: dad sold her to local Gentle Lord (Gentle? Sounds yummy!), aunt likes to play in the bed with her dead sister’s husband, and twin-sister is so silly. Nyx kinda hates them, 'cause they would live happily ever after while she has to marry a demon (gentle but still) and save a county with her own life.
Arcadia is a Greek land that is cut from the rest of the world with a weird Parchment Dome. The sun is fake, stars weren’t seen in ages, and Gentle Lord rules this place. Locals bargain with him, despite potential consequences. Nyx's father knows it firsthand. But he has a plan! He's teaching his doomed daughter alchemist stuff which would help to destroy the spell closed Arcadia within the Dome. Nyx is going to find four hearts of four elements (water, fire, air, and earth) and paint a few symbols, thus the Gentle Lord’s castle would collapse on itself and Arcadia would be free. Of course, Nyx will be dead, but who cares? Obviously, not Daddy.
Oh, did I mention that this Gentle Lord isn’t the only Arcadia’s problem? He has a whole army of shadows which could eat you alive or drive you mad. They sing an odd song in da style of “One, Two, Freddy's coming for you, Three, Four, better lock your door…”.
Nyx gets to marry a stone (the Lord doesn't live in his castle), then father, sister, and aunt drive 'happy' bride to her true husband tell their adios, and leave. Soon our MC discovers that Gentle Lord is also a Handsome Lord, his home literally has no boundaries, there are everything you would wish for: good wine, tasty food, rare books and a bunch of corpses. Oh well, maybe you wouldn't wish for a company of eight dead women, but don't look a gift horse in the mouth. It's rude. Nyx, for one, doesn't freak out much, 'cause it's hard to desire to kiss and to kill a person while being afraid of a room with mummies.
BTW, you might think that an empty house with a lone owner has no place for a love-triangle. Wrong. Out Lord has a shadow, this shadow's alive and calls itself Shade. Guess what? Our MC grows to feel for this 3d-thing.
Ambivalence of Nyx is mixing up with Greek mythology and Nyx's wandering around the castle which very fast starts getting on your nerves. To make your misery worse, out girl would whining, and bitching, and whining again: "I love my family, I hate them. I'm evil, but they all are bastards, jerks, and ughr. I have to save the world, but screw it." And so on.
As you see, I didn’t relate with MC, and I think this is the main reason of my disliked for the book. Romantic scenes didn’t affect me, pacing was slow, there was no connection with characters (thus no fire), no suspense, no dynamic or good action. The story was all about Nyx waking up, eating, walking between rooms, having trouble, kissing and flirting with Shade, kissing and flirting with Gentle Lord, falling asleep, waking up...
And the plot was predictable... very predictable. Also, some parts of the book seemed incomplete or lacked logical ties. Sometimes I had to check previous chapters just to be sure that I hadn't miss a paragraph or two, 'cause author loved to jump from one thing to the other without warning.
I'm sorry, I really sorry to feel like that about Cruel Beauty. Still, there were some moments I had enjoyed. For example, the Arcadia's curse, I loved the idea of it. The Gentle Lord himself (dark, snarky, sexy). The writing was lyrical and poetic. And the book's dark atmosphere.
All in all, Cruel Beauty wasn't a waste of time, but it wasn't a good cup of tea either.

Аннотация

Избежать долга нельзя. Но Никс возмущает бездействие членов семьи, им будто плевать на ее судьбу. В то же время девушка злится на свое желание избежать уготованной участи. На исходе семнадцатого дня рождения Никс становится супругой могущественного, бессмертного Игнифекса. Каков ее план? Соблазнить чудовище, разрушить его зачарованный замок, а с ним и многовековое проклятье, лежащие на целом государстве.
Но Игнифекс совсем не такой, каким ожидала увидеть его Никс. Ее влечет к этому необъяснимо привлекательному лорду, а замок его – лабиринт, комнаты которого ежедневно меняются местами.
Пока Никс ищет способ освободить страну, пытаясь раскрыть тайну Игнифекса, она понимает, что начинает в него влюбляться. Но любовь к врагу не избавляет от долга. Время уже на исходе, и Никс предстоит решить, что важнее: будущее королевства или мужчина, в которого ей не следовало влюбляться.
Рецензия
Ретеллинг «Красавицы и чудовища». Ожидания не оправдались.
Начиналось все круто. Никс, главная героиня, от лица которой ведется рассказ, мысленно поносит свою семейку (состав: папашка – «продавший» ее местному лорду-няшке (его так и зовут – Gentle Lord); тетя – сестра покойной матери, потрахивающаяся с папашкой; сестра-близняшка, которая вообще-то двойняшка), готовится к свадьбе с чудовищем местного разлива и к спасению Аркадии.
Аркадия – греческое государство, отгороженное от мира каким-то пергаментным куполом. Солнце нарисованное, звезд никто отродясь не видел. Правит Аркадией Няшка. Местные то и дело заключают с ним всякого рода сделки, о чем потом горько жалеют. Как, например, отец Никс. Хотя нет, ему вроде как пофиг. Он натаскал свою проспоренную дочь в какой-то алхимии и велел разрушить проклятье: Найди сердца четырех элементов – воды, огня, воздуха и земли – накаляй определенные символы, и замок Няшки рухнет. Ты умрешь, а мы будем свободны.
Ах да, одним Няшкой беды не ограничиваются. Аркадию терроризируют тени, сводящие с ума тех, на кого нападают. Еще они поют какую-то песенку в стиле «Раз, два, Фредди заберет тебя…». Жутики. Командует жутиками Няшка.
Никс женят на камне, который типа лорд, а затем высаживают у дверей замка истинного лорда и говорят ей «адьес». Няшка оказывается красавцем с офигенным чувством юмора, хата у него безразмерная, работа непыльная, еды валом и восемь дохлых жен в анамнезе. Никс хочет его прибить и целовать тоже хочет, да и тень его ничего… Я серьезно, тень! Казалось бы, о каком любовном треугольнике может идти речь, когда ГГ заперта в безлюдном доме? Это же Никс. Она влюбляется в тень Няшки по имени Шейд (что как бэ «тень» и именем не является). Выходит, один почти человек, но глаза кошачьи, а второй 3D-тень с нормальными глазами. Хоть разорвись. Метания нашей ГГ перемежаются с греческой мифологией и бродилками по замку, что ближе к середине надоедает. Как и нытье: я ненавижу свою семью, я люблю свою семью, я не должна всех спасать, я должна всех спасать.
У меня коннекта с персами не случилось, а потому я не особо переживала, не сожрут ли Никс в одном из помещений, спасет ли она Аркадию… Романтичные моменты мимо. Во-первых, описание какое-то скомканное и плоское, а во-вторых, нет коннекта – нет огня. Итого: интереса ноль, динамики ноль (встала, поела, поспорила с Няшкой, пошла побродила по дому, пообжималась с Тенью…).
Сюжетная канва очень похожа на оригинальную сказку. А расхождения легко угадываются. Восприятию мешает алогичность повествования. Порой казалось, что нить повествования упущена, а на деле – автор решила поскакать с одного на другое или сплющить это одно с другим. При этом текст складный, язык красив… а шикарная идея загублена.
Хотя… кое-что мне понравилось. Суть проклятья Аркадии – хитросделанная штука. И атмосфера – мрачносделанная штука.
