This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab

Release: July 5th 2016 by Greenwillow Books, 427 pages

4 out of 10
Genre: teen-ish-YA, au, urban fantasy, post-apocalyptic
Stuff: people and monsters
Fail: development, action, plot-logic, predictability
WOW: main idea, writing style, August (before he went Marty Stu)
POV: 3-rd person, she/he
Love-Geometry: no romantic line, at all

Quote-Core: "It doesn’t matter if you’re monster or human. Living hurts."

Summary

There’s no such thing as safe.

Kate Harker wants to be as ruthless as her father. After five years and six boarding schools, she’s finally going home to prove that she can be.

August Flynn wants to be human. But he isn’t. He’s a monster, one that can steal souls with a song. He’s one of the three most powerful monsters in a city overrun with them. His own father’s secret weapon.

Their city is divided.

Their city is crumbling.

Kate and August are the only two who see both sides, the only two who could do something.

But how do you decide to be a hero or a villain when it’s hard to tell which is which?

Review

Buddy read with my beautiful monsters Sassai - Vira, Julia, and Nastassja who would lure you with their innocent eyes and undeniable cuteness and then sass you to death.
Sassai, Sassai, wits and sass,
They love to read and make a mess.
Only when there's a strong need, I swear.

Btw, my rant would be very compact, for the detailed one go and read Julia's review. She did great.

So... under no circumstances could I ever presume that I wouldn't like a book by Victoria Schwab. And This Savage Song proved me wrong *runs to cry for a while*. Only two things did actually bring me joy: the concept and writing style. But the characters, atmosphere, plot-logic, and plot itself were strikingly disappointing.

We have an AU-post-apocalyptic world, where people's sins give birth to horrible monsters. Some feed on your flesh (Corsai), the others - on your blood (Malchai), and there's the third kind who feed on your soul and no less (Sunai). We also have a city named Verity which is splinted in two: the Northside belongs to Callum Harker who controls monsters within his territory and provides safety to those people who pay him dearly; the Southside is under Henry Flynn's FTF, this man prefers to kill beasts instead of a bargain with them. Kate, our female main lead, is the only Harker's child. August, the male MC, is a member of Flynn's family. Cards are on the table. Let's play the game.

First of all, violence really breeds:
Someone pulls a trigger, sets off a bomb, drives a bus full of tourists off a bridge, and what's left in the wake isn't just she'll casings, wreckage, bodies. There's something else. Something bad. An aftermath. A recoil. A reaction to all that anger and pain and death.
That's how monsters come to life. We let them, we make them. Isn't it a very interesting ground to build a story upon? Indeed. But despite the fact that I'm always up for speculations about the dualism of human nature, blurred lines between heroism and villainy, plus monsters, big and small, I was bored and indifferent during this read (except for a scene at school, I'm sure you know which one it was).

Why?

Teen-ish stuff (I hate to read about the school, even the walls in my room are way more interesting), a lot of cliches (I don't mind them, but only with due limits), flat characters (Kate and August are the only heroes with some kind of personalities), lineal plot (not turns, no twists), predictability (my inner Sherlock's not amused).

What was my driven force then?

There were so many dark places to go and to explore (that's not a compliment: I can tell confusion from mystery) that I had no chance but to read further and find out how exactly everything works. Did I get my answers in the end? Yes and no. Some things in this book just are. Callum Harker bent monsters to his will. How? Why his Malchai-pet is so bossy? What makes him better and smarter than others? Why all Corsai are alike, but Malchai aren't, as well as Sunai?  Why one kind of bad deed makes a soul red while the others (from the same category) don't? Why this, why that...

And can I just say that a lot of details are kinda far-fetched and convenient? Monsters can't lie, but they foxes with their answers. People are eager to confess in the Sunai, but do it randomly. Going dark for Sunai was described as a wild and deadly explosion, but turned out to be something that they actually can control.

Also, this trick with music being not necessary to steal someone's soul did ruin Sunai's charm and violated their limits. Why bother with it in the first place? For gentle killings? For fancy hypnosis? Melodies were supposed to take souls, not hands. And I didn't expect Sunai to be angels of mercy with a conscience (even if they can burn it away). They seem to be not monsters but gods. And that's just no.

Speaking of NOs, look at TTS's characters. Secondary ones are just tools, they show up and disappear without any trace. Main ones... (the next paragraph contains mild spoilers not only for This Savage Song but for A Darker Shade of Magic as well. If you don't wanna know anything, skip it).

A girl with a dark past and partial disability act arrogantly to hide her vulnerability, she can fight and dreams of greatness. The girl meets an adopted and moody boy who belongs to a limited kind of powerful creatures (only two Antari, only three Sunai). At first, she is frightened but curious, but she has no time to decide whether the boy is nice, 'cause they get in trouble and have to go on the run. Their adventures bring them close and make them bros. At the end of the book, they both participate in a battle, the girl tries to help the boy, while he's kinda possessed, not to kill her and not to start war/apocalypse. They won. After that the girl leaves the boy and goes to find her own adventure, the boy comes back to his family. One of the bad guys (with an iron thing in his chest) turns out to be alive. The end.

You may ask why I just retold you the whole ADSOM's plot, but guys... it was This Savage Song's plot too. Only with Kate instead of Lila and August instead of Kell. But while August has some unique and likable lines in his portrait, Kate is annoying as hell. She's trying too hard, and I like my badass-heroines to be smoother in their ways. My problems with August's started only with his going dark episode. I like my powerful heroes to be... less powerful? To be more realistic.

The ending was anticlimactic. I felt nothing... What tension? No tension. What suspense? Indeed, what?

All in all, this book is a beautiful palace with empty rooms and not very good decoration. I did like only its facade.

PS: I still don't get to what the story goes. What its plot-goal is? To kill all the monsters besides Sunai? Then to kill all the sinners too? That would be just every second man on this earth... And then what?

Summary

Lia and Rafe have escaped Venda and the path before them is winding and dangerous - what will happen now? This third and final book in The Remnant Chronicles is not to be missed.

Review

Buddy-read with my beloved friends Vira aka Vendan and Nastassja aka Morrighan (Dalbreck is my baby!). Thank you for giving me a chance to one of my favorite series ever, for your open hearts and raw emotions. You're the best!

When I finished the book, I went to my sister to retell her the plot (she doesn't read in English, so I had to give her at least a short story, or else she wouldn't understand my tears for no reason during a few next days xD). But once I started my exposition, I got that The Remnant Chronicles isn't a straight line, it's a network. You can't go through it using only one thread, each of them demands to bring another, plus you should keep in mind the first one. My mission failed, but I was overwhelmed with the realization of how hard Mary Pearson worked for such an intricate result.

First of all, YES, the ending did satisfy me. Maybe not for 100 percent, 'cause a true fan is always eager for more, but I feel happy. Though you have to know this happiness isn't about only a few last pages, my feelings embrace the whole series. The Remnant Chronicles is a journey, during which we experience a lot of different things, strong emotions, and fuse with the world, the characters, and their lives. So 100% or not, I had no chance to go through The Beauty of Darkness and end up being grumpy. Miserable? Yeah. Devastated? Indeed. But ungrateful for the colossal work Mary Pearson has done? Never.

The following text would contain SPOILERS, so be warned and don't read it before you finished the book.

Let's start with the world-building.

We have a post-apocalyptic era, people of these times consider us - their ancestors - gods. And that's understandable. If you are a medieval person and hear that someone could fly among stars, you think of this someone as of a really mighty fellow. What's scary is that the concept is so well-developed, you can't help but think about many civilizations that ceased to exist before we came and that we aren't the last as well.
"No one is too great to fall."
Thus one world falls, the other rises. Endless circle. That's also mainline of the story. History has a way to repeat itself. The folks of this world think that the earth is flat - so did we a long time ago - just because they have no means for distant travels (I remember them having a port, a sea, but I can't remember anything of new lands), though if they managed to come from barbarians to medieval people... I'm sure they eventually would transform into us. Again.

By the by, that's really disturbing how people were fooled by a wrong knowledge, how their history turned out to be almost a lie. How much of our history is a fruit of misunderstanding or disinformation or even somebody's imagination?

Sorry, I lost my focus. We were talking about the world. All these verses, songs, legends are such a treasure. Mary Pearson created a future full of rich details, and this future seems very real, palpable. Languages, cultural nuances, mindsets... When you read this series you see how different all the people in it are, that various names for kingdoms and nations aren't just names, that the author made up A WORLD with everything any world is supposed to have. That's incredible.

Now to the places. We have three big kingdoms and a lot of lesser ones, I suppose there are more, but since our medieval babes don't travel much, who knows.

Morrighan. It's a beautiful place that is humble and great at the same time. Jafir and his dear Remnant-girl would be amazed by what became of a place they decided to stay on centuries ago. And a true heart of betrayal is actually beating here.

Venda. I have sympathy for this kingdom, but sympathy isn't loved. Venda has very interesting traditions, as well as a cruel history, but my feels toward it are similar to Rafe's. Understanding. Empathy. Anger. Venda stole something vital from my ship. I know all the reasons but ache all the same.

Dalbreck. We didn't see much of this kingdom but met its people and that was somehow enough. Given that, people make countries and grace places, sometimes they are more than enough to understand their homeland. And I understood Dalbreck. Moreover, I fell for its inhabitants. I would never forget that even at military outposts there are splendid clothes, delicious food, sparkling jewels, and lovely balls. Darlbretch combines beauty and strength. And honor! Only their kingdom had no traitors after all. They can play around each other, but never against. At Lia's place, I would come with Rafe. For me, Dalbreck is like Venda for her.

A few words about prophecies and stuff. I think there was no prophesy at all. Only a plea, a message from ancestors to future generations. The story teaches us that there are no special 'chosen ones' to solve war and hatred among people; only those who can choose to become a 'chosen', to 'sacrifice' themselves for the greater good. And that the result wouldn't last forever. Wars would be back. Hearts would be tested. But someone would bring hope. Why not you?

The gift. That's a weird thing... I wouldn't call it magic, but it's not a simple intuition either. Songs of Venda could refer to any conflict between men, the name Jezelia could be a mere trigger for descendants, but kavah and its details can't be explained like that. One had to literally foresee it to be so specific in his or her predictions. And then there are Kaden's, Lia's, and her mother's visions which are like psychic abilities. Not magic, but supernatural much.

The characters. This series has so many wonderful heroes! And Mary developed as good as possible even the secondary ones. That's a dangerous thing, though. 'Cause war takes people's lives, it doesn't give a damn if you already care about them. The most painful losses to me were Darbretch soldiers and generals. As I said before, I have a soft spot for men from this kingdom. That's why I wanna start my character-talk with Rafe's closest comrades:

Orrin aka Hang-Me-If-My-Name-Isn't-The-Best, Jeb aka Cruvas-Linen-Shirts-Are-The-Best, Tavish aka My-Strategies-Are-The-Best, and Sven aka My-King-Is-The-Best ARE THE BEST. I was intrigued by them in book #1, amazing in book #2 and I don't know how to live without them after book #3. You have no idea what a river I've cried after Jeb's death. I still can't believe he's gone. If Mary would ask me, 'Okay, Kat. If not Jeb, then who?', I wouldn't be able to answer. No one? I know that 'no one' is for fairytales and The Remnant Chronicles are far from tales.

Vendan guys. I mean, Griz and Eben. Thank you Mary for saving these two! All of my favorite Rahtan are alive (including Kaden), yay! A mountain of a man and a wolfling of a boy deserves a lot of beautiful tomorrows.

Vagabonds and Natiya. The former I liked from The Kiss of Deception, the latter became a really stressful factor in this book. I knew that Lia had to stay alive because of Kaden's vision, but one can't be so sure when it comes to the series' finals. Natiya seemed as if Lia's a substitute for the case of her possible death.

Morrighese girls. Berdie, Gwyneth, and Pauline plus the Queen and Lia's aunts. I adore these women. Each has a different kind of strength, and each is a good example of feminine badassery. One can be a beauty, a mother, a simple girl, and a warrior at the same time. No matter what battlefield they fight on.

Lia. Oh, how I wanted to slap her not once and even not twice during this book. A million times I was ready to rant in a status-update, but my irritation with Lia never lasted long. She managed to be opposite things within a few phrases. One second you curse her name, the next you sing dithyrambs to her person. I still disagree with many of her decisions, but I can't deny that the girl gained my respect. That's more than a blind love for a character. More and deeper. The one thing I won't forgive her for is her willingness to give up on Rafe. I know, long partings mean a lot of tears, she merely tried to prevent more pain, but fuck her reasons. When it comes to Rafe I just go nuts. All in all, Lia is a complicated character who exists in a grey area. We always ask authors for someone like her, but not always ready to deal with such heroines.

Rafe. Even when we relate with a few (or more) characters in a book, there's always a special one whose side you're on no matter what and whose feelings are yours. For me, that character was (and still is) Rafe. I went through The Remnant Chronicles in his shoes. That's why I tolerate (and sometimes love) Lia. That's why I'm not very fond of Venda while mad about Dalbreck and have respect for Morrighan. That's why I love his people more than other characters. But my love for him came from other sources: his actions and way of thoughts. Try to process what this young man had been through the whole series. How duty fought love in his heart, how longing fought responsibility. How many times he turned upside-down the world for Lia. His love was that big that he let her go. Then came to her side. And helped, asking nothing in return. Lia might be a hero, but without Rafe, there would be no Lia. Also, in this book, we see Rafe's true self. In The Kiss of Deception he 'was' a farmer, in The Heart of Betrayal - an emissary. Now we've got a chance to see a Prince and a King. No more pretending, no more false attitude. Only raw passion and great honor. I have to stop, or else my review would turn out into Rafe's praising. Just mind that this character is my favorite male-lead among favorite male-leads.

Kaden. He grew on me after a long trip from book #1, but my feeling toward him never been passionate. Sorrow? Sympathy? Kindness? Whatever. 'Cause any feeling had been shadowed by jealousy (Rafe's emotions, remember?). I started to actually like him once I got that my ship was safe. I know, bad Kat. But I couldn't bring myself to let him in my heart before. I was (and still am) madly in love with Rafe. In this book, Kaden is somehow softer. The final of the previous installment had changed him. Blood of his kin, betrayal of Lia, the end of the old life. Kaden always wanted two things: to be loved and to belong. But he was searching for it in the wrong place, was asking the wrong person. Until he wasn't. And you know what? Without mooning around Lia Kaden became a million times better, stronger, and way more intriguing. I loved to see the world and other people through his eyes. I loved to find another thing aside from Lia, and of course Venda, in his head and heart. But it grieves me that this Kaden did show up this late, I would love to spend more time with such a wonderful man.

Relationships. This series is not about only one kind of love, but of many. Parents and children, siblings, friends, partners, mates, fellows, comrades, and, yes, lovers. This story is about all of them and their bonds. And how weak or strong these kinds of bonds do make us. There are a lot of sweet and bitter and bittersweet moments between the characters. And one of them (or even all) would strike you hard. 'Cause there is no man with a heart on this earth who would remain indifferent while a child is missing his mother or a father is losing his son or a friend is dying on your lap or a lover is leaving you for the best.

Ships.

Lia and Rafe. WHAT A ROMANCE! What had started as seeming (or not so?) instalove grew into a passion and then into deep love. What's interesting in a suchlike situation? Where's intrigue? Calm down. Love and desire to be together don't guarantee anything. Mary Pearson didn't play with triangles, misunderstandings, and dances around confessions, 'cause she had other ways to prolong readers' torture. You can love as long as you please a king of another kingdom, but what if you have your own duties and can't join him in his realm? What if he has a lot of problems as well and can't put you first his own country? What if you both know that nothing would change even when all the problems are gone? Lia and Rafe have different paths to take and one love to share. Sometimes their ship would play off fireworks in your heart, sometimes the play would go on with knives. And until the very last page, you would have no idea how their story ends. Here's your intrigue. Try not to go grey.

Kaden and Lia. Kaden's feelings toward Lia came from his vision, so I guess all this time he'd been in love not with a person, but with an idea of happiness, love, and peace. We know how easy to fall for someone when you have a good reason. I mean, that's one thing to like a random girl and the other to see this girl and a child as a promise from the future. That's hard to ignore. He wanted this vision to come true, he let himself to be charmed by Lia, though she always did favor the other man. But shared a history. They've been through many things together. And that couldn't vanish into thin air. Couldn't and didn't. Instead, it transformed into a beautiful friendship. I know that their shippers would be upset, but please don't diminish what Lia and Kaden have. That kind of relationship is a rarity between men and women.

Kaden and Rafe. Their understanding gave me joy. I see a potential strong friendship and the true bromance between these two. I love to see how two old rivals can one say start to respect and admire each other's personalities, to work side by side.

Kaden and Pauline. For some, their ship seems very rushed, but remember The Kiss of Deception! There already were signs. Pauline isn't a random witch who came to steal our precious boy, they had a past. Plus their romance is burning slow. Both know unhappy love and betrayal. That's why they won't hurt each other. Ever. And their paring is well-balanced. Kaden and Pauline's chapters gave me a lot of joy during this painful read. Where Lia and Rafe were squeezing my heart with angst, these two were making me smile.

Gwyneth and Griz. Oh, heavens above! They remind me of Beast and Sybella from His Fair Assassin series! Highly approved.

The plot is very complex and has a lot of twists. A LOT. Emotion- and action-packed chapters would give you no time for catching your breath. Not a single page of 688 was boring or unnecessary. If anything, +100 pages wouldn't hurt this book, 'cause there were a few rushed things I would love to see more of. Also, I love how Mary deals with the characters' secrets. They talk! They solve their problems. And never hide anything just to drag the plot. Some authors try to make a bookish soup only with water and bones, building a plot around several not really exciting mysteries. Pearson has meat, vegetables, and spices, her pockets are full of surprises, she doesn't have to make a show of anything. True mastery.

The mood. Dark with light sparks. A few sparks. Actually, very few. Just be ready for an endless heart-attack. But don't worry, there's no cruelty for cruelty's sake. Only real ugliness of hard times.

Writing-style. So easy to read! The text is wonderful, rich, and fluid. And you know... if a reader cries over a story or laugh at it, or wants to marry a character (*cough* Rafe *cough*), I believe that is not just the plot's manipulations, that's the power of words. Mary cuts and heals with them. And I always hope for the last sentences of her books to be from the latter category.

Pre-ending had almost killed me, the ending made me whole. And this thing with Rafe coming as the King's emissary, looking like a farmer and bringing to Lia a few melons... What a great reference to all of his identities in this series! He looked like three men at once. I hope Lia understands how lucky she is to be Rafe's everything. Lia may be a good queen and a leader, but she's so stupid in love... she did next to nothing for her future with my favorite character ever; though... being stupid in love doesn't mean being unable to love somebody and I know that she truly loves him. Now be happy and don't you dare to die not on the same date.

I wanna thank Mary Pearson again. Strong emotions about books aren't uncommon to me, but The Remnant Chronicles took up a notch.

Paviamma, my friends.

Paviamma...

Summary

Intrigue abounds in this hotly anticipated sequel to The Kiss of Deception!

Held captive in the barbarian kingdom of Venda, Lia and Rafe have little chance of escape. Desperate to save her life, Lia's erstwhile assassin, Kaden, has told the Vendan Komizar that she has the gift, and the Komizar's interest in Lia is greater than anyone could have foreseen.

Meanwhile, nothing is straightforward: there's Rafe, who lied to Lia, but has sacrificed his freedom to protect her; Kaden, who meant to assassinate her but has now saved her life; and the Vendans, whom Lia always believed to be barbarians. Now that she lives amongst them, however, she realizes that may be far from the truth. Wrestling with her upbringing, her gift, and her sense of self, Lia must make powerful choices that will affect her country... and her own destiny.

Review

First, 50-60% of the book are just the beginning: putting new characters in the plot, the introduction of Venda and its specifics, alignment of forces, game planning. It wasn’t boring but my heart wasn’t pumping either. And then… I couldn’t eat, sleep, sit, stand until the book was over (and it was hard to finish the story ‘cause I was eager to know what was next and afraid of it at the same time).

So, Venda. Venda’s life is quite barbaric. Indeed. And its people are narrow-minded and a bit pagandom-ish. But their traditions, language, and the way they used to be aren’t worse than Morrighan’s or Darblreack’s locals have. Paviamma, for example, is such a beautiful word. It means love, friendship, something light, sweet, and important at once. This word reminds me of Indian mantras. It’s tasty on my tongue.

Okay, what else we would know about Venda?

- You can get power by killing the man whose position you desire to have. Venda has no royals. It is ruling by Komizar and his Council, governors, quarter loads, and the inner guard circle named Rahtan (Kaden belongs to it).

- Venda has no children. No matter if you’re only 5-year-old, you must work as much as adults do and your punishes would be the same as theirs. Also remember, if you die, others would come to replace you. You are replaceable.

- Venda is located in the north. Its winters are cold and snowy.

- The kingdom has a few lands to grow food; its territory is cut from the rest continent by a large river. Local people are doomed to die from starvation.

Lia and Rafe are Komizar’s prisoners now. Komizar is 29, black-haired and black-eyed man with Christian Grey's attitude (though I think Christian can take a lesson or two from Komizar).
I knew why he chose the brown. It was the plainest of my dresses, certainly drab in his eyes, but all the better to contrast and showcase the red he’d have me wear tomorrow. I had no doubt he’d ordered the snow itself as the perfect backdrop, and surely he’d ordered the sun to shine in the morning so as not to deter the crowds.
Lia knows that Rafe isn’t a farmer. Well, everybody knows that by now. But they have no idea that he isn’t an emissary either while Lia has. And she accepts this news without hysterics. I expected a lot of drama after this revelation, but Lia gave me a pleasant surprise.
He said:
I’m not the farmer I claimed to be, but I hope I can make you fall in love with me again, this time as a prince, one day at a time. We’ve had a terrible start—it doesn’t mean we can’t have a better ending.
And she agreed.

How Rafe convinced Komizar to keep him alive? He said the King of Dalbreck is very ill and after his death, the Prince would take a throne and come to Venda to make an alliance against Morrighan. Komizar believed him with one condition: if the Prince wouldn’t come in a month, his Emissary would go to Dalbreck in parts. Thank god, Rafe’s friends were already in Venda, so he hoped they would manage to sneak into the city and help him and Lia to flee.

Kaden thought he’ll bring Lia to Venda and they will live long and happy.
Because I so stupidly loved her.
Uh-huh. He calls Rafe a court confectionery while he himself is a Mr. Naïve Assassin. Komizar has his own plans for his girl. They start with abuse, continue with beating and end up with marriage. What's funny, Kaden isn’t a fiance.
This wasn’t the story I had written for myself. Not the story of Terravin and salty breezes and love.
Yes, it wasn’t. She had to escape this place. But during her time in Venda, she got used to locals. They are kind but unprotected and weak, without men like Komizar they will die sooner than you think. They don't know other life. I was afraid Lia's love for them would be so big, she'd decide not to leave their country. But the terrible truth came out and she understood that not only Venda needs to be saved, but the rest kingdoms are also, too, in danger.

Love triangle. It exists, but MC made her choice in the first book and stuck with it. Kaden loves her, but she sees in him only a potential friend and a good guy among bad people. He always says that Venda comes first (until the final of the book, so now I really don’t know what would happen next) while Rafe’s priority all along was Lia and only Lia.
“It was worth it, Lia,” He said. “Every mile, every day. I’d do it all again. I’d chase you across three continents if that’s what it took to be with you.”
And:
“But you’re everything I want. Remember that. I love you, Lia. Not a title. And not because a piece of paper says I should. Because I do.”
Isn’t it beautiful?! If Kaden would break it, I'll break him too.

I wanna say a few words about the secondary characters. Pearson has a lot of them in the story and each has a fate, nature, and temper (no matter how much this person matters for the plot).

We have three kingdoms and three truths, and I ache for them all together. We know next to nothing about Darbreck but Rafe’s soldiers are a good example of its locals those are awesome.

I can't tell much about the plot without spoilers. It was a heartbreaking journey in so many ways, but there were sweet and even hot moments among the pain. This read wasn't an easy one and the final just blew my mind. If I had a habit to gnaw my nails, my hands might be eaten too at the end of this book.

I have some theories about the next book, but honestly, I have no idea what Mary will do or already did (I know she’s through the 50% with The Beauty of Darkness).

All I can say, I didn’t expect this book to be so good. I was ready to give it around 7-7.5 stars and then it started to get better, better, and better.

PS: Rafe, if Lia will end up with Kaden, you can have me. Or you can have me anyway. You’re my new book-boyfriend. Congratulations.

What I expect from book #3:

- We should know the name of Kaden’s father. And they have to meet, I guess.
- Lia will expose the Chancellor’s true nature and save all the kingdoms.
- Rafe has to take the throne or Dalbreck will try to conquer Morrighan (his father wanted it, didn’t he?).
- Kaden has to fall in love with Pauline (and kill Mikael first) or Calantha. I know, he’s sweet but I’m team-Rafe, that’s all.
- Lia will reunion three lands and bring peace upon the continent.
- Rafe and Lia must have their hot-love moments. I’m ready for a fire and swooooning.
- Kaden will be next Komizar. Even if temporary.
- We were in Venda and Morrighan so now we have to see the Dalbreck life from within.

As to Kaden’s vision, I have a few theories. Maybe Rafe will be killed and Lia will be left pregnant? She’ll come back to Venda and Kaden will accept her baby as his own. Or this baby belongs to Pauline? Maybe that’s she who will be with him and Lia will be in Venda just with an official (or friend) visit? Kaden remembered Pauline is the kindest and sweetest girl in the world!

It’s just… I can’t see Kaden and Lia together while Rafe’s alive and alone. He was ready to die for her! Kaden used to say that Venda comes first while Rafe Lia came first from the very start. And when she thought that she’ll die she screamed: I love you. For him. All she did was for him! She knows how Kaden feels for her but thought that she’ll never be able to feel for him the same. She admits that she cares for him but that’s it. I ache for Rafe and Lia. They are one of my fav pairings now.

And you know… this is the final book. You don’t have to worry about MCs in the first two books, they should live or what the final book will be about? But when it comes to the last part of the series… you can never know what will happen. And it drives me craaazy.

Summary

A princess must find her place in a reborn world.

She flees on her wedding day.

She steals ancient documents from the Chancellor's secret collection.

She is pursued by bounty hunters sent by her own father.

She is Princess Lia, seventeen, First Daughter of the House of Morrighan.

The Kingdom of Morrighan is steeped in tradition and the stories of a bygone world, but some traditions Lia can't abide. Like having to marry someone she's never met to secure a political alliance.

Fed up and ready for a new life, Lia flees to a distant village on the morning of her wedding. She settles in among the common folk, intrigued when two mysterious and handsome strangers arrive—and unaware that one is the jilted prince and the other an assassin sent to kill her. Deceptions swirl and Lia finds herself on the brink of unlocking perilous secrets—secrets that may unravel her world—even as she feels herself falling in love.

Review
“Maybe there were as many shades of love as the blues of the sky.”

I was ill (literally, with cough and running nose) when I finished the book and didn’t know whether I’d be able to press the keyboard’s buttons to write my review or not. Thank God I managed to do it. The thing is, after The Kiss of Deception I immediately started The Heart of Betrayal, so I had to express myself sooner until my feelings didn't mix up with emotions for the sequel.

So… I liked the writing style, the plot’s structure, and the MC’s voice (she’s a good (and witty) narrator):
“A six-inch blade. I smiled. Did he buy it? It was actually just shy of four—but very nicely weighted—and as Aunt Bernice noted, a little exaggeration was always expected when describing weapons, victories, and body parts.”
Touching moments were so touching, I was crying in the underground train and then at work and stopped only after the book was over (I wasn't myself after that, I was a panda, thanks to my mascara; pretty panda, thanks to my parents).

But let’s get back to the start. The point is, a young Princess with a looong name, which I didn’t remember, had to marry a foreign Prince (political alliances and stuff). She was betrothed blindly, and instead of her fiancée to sign some important documents came to his father, old Kind (and when I say old I mean veeeery old, so old that our Lia (yep, one of her names is Lia) decided that her future husband’s at least 50-year-old). The Princess had no intention to end up with a princely grandpa so…

She fled on her wedding day, riding a horse just like Julia Roberts in Runaway Bride, but unlike Julia, she wasn’t alone, young servant Pauline had joined her in this adventure. Girls headed off to Pauline’s hometown Terravin, a beautiful place at the seaside, where they were going to find the servant's aunt Berni who was running a local inn. Berni was glad to see her niece again and she took the Princess as her own blood as well. She gave them home, work, and had promised to keep their secret.

Lia was happy. She was leading a simple life, owned nothing to no one, and was ready for true love to come. And true love had arrived in the form of two nineteen-year-old guys who stepped in Berni’s tavern both looking for Lia. One of them, Kaden, had blond hair and stormy brown eyes, he looked like a kind and very nice boy. The other, Rafe, was dark-haired with sun-kissed strikes in his chevelure, his gaze was icy blue and he himself was a bit cold. Both were handsome, strong, and both needed something from Lia. One came for at least her apology, the other for at least her life.

Yes, one of these boys was the offended Prince who was left at the altar by a restive girl on their wedding day. He decided to find the fugitive disease then look at her shameless eyes and maybe to raise the roof (he wasn’t sure what exactly he was going to do when he'd left his kingdom Dalbreck).

And the other guy was an assassin who was gonna kill the local Julia Roberts ‘cause his barbarian land Venda didn’t need Morrighan and Dalbreck to the reunion.

You know, this book has multiPOVs and we will see the TKoD’s world through the Prince’s and the Assassin’s eyes as well as through the Princess’ ones, but in the guys' chapters would be no names or appearance-descriptions. So you would have to guess which boy is coming for killing and which is coming for his lost bride. I’ve got it from the start! Good for me. Seeing as I'd been warned the riddle was coming, I was looking for clues, I was very attentive and thus won the game xDD Next to the 30% of the story you’d got so much information that you'd find out who is who without a doubt. It was a wow-twist, I swear, I'd love this disguise to last 'til the end of the book, but the plot had demanded to show all the aces.

This was the beginning, my friends. What’s next? Wide-open space of the entire continent, danger, tears, death, love, desperation, legends, traditions, adventures…

Mary Pearson did a meticulous job. You know how it could be, sometimes we have a story which is developing within the high-fantasy world but its characters don’t go anywhere, we see only ballrooms, private chambers and stables maybe… In Pearson’s world, we have so much more: distinctive lands and folks, ancient rituals and documents, and history, rich history.

BTW, I stole the map from Mary’s cite. Look at this world:

Our MC will take a hard journey, steel herself with series of loses and wins, open her eyes and find a gift inside (well, first daughters of Morrighan have the gift… sorta oracle one), grow up, and set a serious goal.

Stage 1:
“Who was this girl who thumbed her nose at two kingdoms and did as she pleased?”
Stage 2:
“I am a soldier in my father's army.”
Stage 3:
“Maybe now it was I who would become the assassin.”
Level up, as you see.

I really liked Lia. She’s snarky and combative. Even the hardest times couldn't stop her from hitting back.
“Get out, Kaden. I may be your prisoner, but I’m not your whore.”
Bite me, Assassin! *team-Prince, yaaay*

Yes, I’m on the poor fiancée’s side. Who is all:
“I wanted to break something, but everything around me was already broken.”
He was my fav from the very beginning. Firstly, I have a soft stop for royal men. Secondly, he didn’t fell for Lia instantly; he was angry with her at the start and just then, step by step, opened his heart. Thirdly, he was aware that their future was doubtful which means he has brains. He had lied to Lia about himself (she didn't reveal her identity too, but he was aware of her being a princess, while she had not even the slightest idea of who he was), but there were reasons for this deception. Lia said, she could never respect some papa's boy who let his father find him a bride and was ready to marry a stranger. Also, she didn't want to go back to the royal life while the Prince understood that summer was going to end and he must go home, to his duties, family, people. Why bother each other with something that had been doomed from the start? So he was quite.

BTW, I was expected to confess and Lia to choose the Assassin (and DIE for hurting my dear Prince), but Pearson had other plans.

As to Assassin… Do you wanna know why the book wasn’t over with Lia’s throat being cut in her sleep? The guy came with his fellows, they were gonna explode Morrighese bridges and this mission was going to take around 3 weeks. It was... kill the girl now and leave a comfortable place where you can flirt with prey for a while and end her when the time would come, or have a little patience. Also, the guy used to kill rival soldiers, bad people, and strong men, not pretty little princesses. So he decided to pretend and stay in Terravin undercover. But with every day passing by he was more and more getting interested in Lia. As a result, instead of killing the Princess, he had abducted her with his friends' help and took her for a two months rode-trip, riding to Venda. At the start of the book the Assassin was just annoying, after 200 pages with him I reconsidered this feeling and understood this character better.

However, I'm still team-Prince.

BTW, I’m glad the truth about his personality came out the way it did. It was better than I had imagined.

Overall: I didn’t expect to even like this book, let alone fall in love with it. But I did. Maybe you would too.
