Review

First, 50-60% of the book are just the beginning: putting new characters in the plot, the introduction of Venda and its specifics, alignment of forces, game planning. It wasn’t boring but my heart wasn’t pumping either. And then… I couldn’t eat, sleep, sit, stand until the book was over (and it was hard to finish the story ‘cause I was eager to know what was next and afraid of it at the same time).

So, Venda. Venda’s life is quite barbaric. Indeed. And its people are narrow-minded and a bit pagandom-ish. But their traditions, language, and the way they used to be aren’t worse than Morrighan’s or Darblreack’s locals have. Paviamma, for example, is such a beautiful word. It means love, friendship, something light, sweet, and important at once. This word reminds me of Indian mantras. It’s tasty on my tongue.

Okay, what else we would know about Venda?

- You can get power by killing the man whose position you desire to have. Venda has no royals. It is ruling by Komizar and his Council, governors, quarter loads, and the inner guard circle named Rahtan (Kaden belongs to it).

- Venda has no children. No matter if you’re only 5-year-old, you must work as much as adults do and your punishes would be the same as theirs. Also remember, if you die, others would come to replace you. You are replaceable.

- Venda is located in the north. Its winters are cold and snowy.

- The kingdom has a few lands to grow food; its territory is cut from the rest continent by a large river. Local people are doomed to die from starvation.

Lia and Rafe are Komizar’s prisoners now. Komizar is 29, black-haired and black-eyed man with Christian Grey's attitude (though I think Christian can take a lesson or two from Komizar).

I knew why he chose the brown. It was the plainest of my dresses, certainly drab in his eyes, but all the better to contrast and showcase the red he’d have me wear tomorrow. I had no doubt he’d ordered the snow itself as the perfect backdrop, and surely he’d ordered the sun to shine in the morning so as not to deter the crowds.

Lia knows that Rafe isn’t a farmer. Well, everybody knows that by now. But they have no idea that he isn’t an emissary either while Lia has. And she accepts this news without hysterics. I expected a lot of drama after this revelation, but Lia gave me a pleasant surprise.
He said:

I’m not the farmer I claimed to be, but I hope I can make you fall in love with me again, this time as a prince, one day at a time. We’ve had a terrible start—it doesn’t mean we can’t have a better ending.

And she agreed.

How Rafe convinced Komizar to keep him alive? He said the King of Dalbreck is very ill and after his death, the Prince would take a throne and come to Venda to make an alliance against Morrighan. Komizar believed him with one condition: if the Prince wouldn’t come in a month, his Emissary would go to Dalbreck in parts. Thank god, Rafe’s friends were already in Venda, so he hoped they would manage to sneak into the city and help him and Lia to flee.

Kaden thought he’ll bring Lia to Venda and they will live long and happy.

Because I so stupidly loved her.

Uh-huh. He calls Rafe a court confectionery while he himself is a Mr. Naïve Assassin. Komizar has his own plans for his girl. They start with abuse, continue with beating and end up with marriage. What's funny, Kaden isn’t a fiance.

This wasn’t the story I had written for myself. Not the story of Terravin and salty breezes and love.

Yes, it wasn’t. She had to escape this place. But during her time in Venda, she got used to locals. They are kind but unprotected and weak, without men like Komizar they will die sooner than you think. They don't know other life. I was afraid Lia's love for them would be so big, she'd decide not to leave their country. But the terrible truth came out and she understood that not only Venda needs to be saved, but the rest kingdoms are also, too, in danger.

Love triangle. It exists, but MC made her choice in the first book and stuck with it. Kaden loves her, but she sees in him only a potential friend and a good guy among bad people. He always says that Venda comes first (until the final of the book, so now I really don’t know what would happen next) while Rafe’s priority all along was Lia and only Lia.

“It was worth it, Lia,” He said. “Every mile, every day. I’d do it all again. I’d chase you across three continents if that’s what it took to be with you.”

And:

“But you’re everything I want. Remember that. I love you, Lia. Not a title. And not because a piece of paper says I should. Because I do.”

Isn’t it beautiful?! If Kaden would break it, I'll break him too.

I wanna say a few words about the secondary characters. Pearson has a lot of them in the story and each has a fate, nature, and temper (no matter how much this person matters for the plot).

We have three kingdoms and three truths, and I ache for them all together. We know next to nothing about Darbreck but Rafe’s soldiers are a good example of its locals those are awesome.

I can't tell much about the plot without spoilers. It was a heartbreaking journey in so many ways, but there were sweet and even hot moments among the pain. This read wasn't an easy one and the final just blew my mind. If I had a habit to gnaw my nails, my hands might be eaten too at the end of this book.

I have some theories about the next book, but honestly, I have no idea what Mary will do or already did (I know she’s through the 50% with The Beauty of Darkness).

All I can say, I didn’t expect this book to be so good. I was ready to give it around 7-7.5 stars and then it started to get better, better, and better.

PS: Rafe, if Lia will end up with Kaden, you can have me. Or you can have me anyway. You’re my new book-boyfriend. Congratulations.

What I expect from book #3:

- We should know the name of Kaden’s father. And they have to meet, I guess.
- Lia will expose the Chancellor’s true nature and save all the kingdoms.
- Rafe has to take the throne or Dalbreck will try to conquer Morrighan (his father wanted it, didn’t he?).
- Kaden has to fall in love with Pauline (and kill Mikael first) or Calantha. I know, he’s sweet but I’m team-Rafe, that’s all.
- Lia will reunion three lands and bring peace upon the continent.
- Rafe and Lia must have their hot-love moments. I’m ready for a fire and swooooning.
- Kaden will be next Komizar. Even if temporary.
- We were in Venda and Morrighan so now we have to see the Dalbreck life from within.

As to Kaden’s vision, I have a few theories. Maybe Rafe will be killed and Lia will be left pregnant? She’ll come back to Venda and Kaden will accept her baby as his own. Or this baby belongs to Pauline? Maybe that’s she who will be with him and Lia will be in Venda just with an official (or friend) visit? Kaden remembered Pauline is the kindest and sweetest girl in the world!

It’s just… I can’t see Kaden and Lia together while Rafe’s alive and alone. He was ready to die for her! Kaden used to say that Venda comes first while Rafe Lia came first from the very start. And when she thought that she’ll die she screamed: I love you. For him. All she did was for him! She knows how Kaden feels for her but thought that she’ll never be able to feel for him the same. She admits that she cares for him but that’s it. I ache for Rafe and Lia. They are one of my fav pairings now.

And you know… this is the final book. You don’t have to worry about MCs in the first two books, they should live or what the final book will be about? But when it comes to the last part of the series… you can never know what will happen. And it drives me craaazy.

Рецензия

Первые 50-60% - это завязка, ввод новых персонажей, знакомство с Вендой и ее особенностями, расстановка сил, продумывание стратегий. Я не скучала, но сердце почти не ёкало. Но затем… я не могла ни есть, ни спасть, не сидеть, не стоять, пока не дочитала (при этом читать тоже было непросто – ты хочешь знать, что же дальше, и в то же время боишься).

Венда. Порядки здесь истинно варварские и люди не без предрассудков, но их вера, язык и традиции по красоте и величию не уступают цивилизованным Далбреку и Морригану. Павьамма – венданское слово, означающее и любовь, и дружбу, и родственные связи; оно напоминает мне об индийских мантрах и его приятно произносить. Итак, что же мы можем сказать о Венде?

- Власть над ней сосредоточена в руках одного человека – Комизара. Ему помогают править Совет, губернаторы и лорды вроде наших мэров. Его защищает внутренний круг – Ратан (10 солдат, готовых отдать свою жизнь за того, кому служат; и да, Кейден среди них). Знать проживает в Санктуме. Власть получают путем убийства – лишаешь жизни губернатора и становишься губернатором; лишаешь жизни Комизара – Венда твоя (как и мишень на спине).

- В Венде нет детей. Никто (хотя исключения есть) не пожалеет пятилетнего малыша. За воровство отрезают пальцы, за повторное – руки. Убей или умри, терпи, борись – вот, что внушает местной детворе.

- Венда – северное государство. Зимы здесь холодные, голодные и снежные.

- Ресурсов в стране мало: негде выращивать злаки, негде разводить скот. А дело в том, что земли эти отрезаны бурной рукой от остального мира, в который их не пускают, обрекая на медленную смерть.

Лия и Рэйф – пленники Комизара, темноволосого, черноглазого мужчины двадцати девяти лет с замашками Кристиана Грея (вру, Кристиан неженка и ссыкун по сравнению с этим венданским парнишкой). Да, принцессе теперь известно, кто же такой синеглазый фермер из Терравина, а остальным (и Кейдену в том числе) – нет. Рэйф представляет королевским послом Далбрека и от лица принца Джексона Тируса Рэфферти (коим и является) предлагает Венде союз против Морригана. Он утверждает, что король вот-вот сыграет в язык и тогда принц лично явится к Комизару на переговоры. Тщеславие застилает варварские глаза и Рэйфу верят. Положение Лии куда плачевней. Кейден старается оградить ее от местных угроз, но Комизару перечить не смеет, а у того особые планы на гостью из Морригана…

Все злоключении Лии из первой части меркнут на фоне происходящего с ней в Венде. Унижения, побои, угрозы, шантаж, обреченность – это вам не тарелки в таверне разносить. Вот только принцесса у нас не лыком шитая, за три недели она пройдет путь от девчонки в мешке вместо платья до всенародной любимицы. Но…

«Не такой истории я для себя хотела. Это не Терравин, не соленый бриз, не любовь».

Она не намерена оставаться в Венде. Ей нужно бежать. И Рэйфу нужно бежать (если его раскроют, а случится это довольно скоро, головы ему не сносить). Люди принца (а их всего четверо) тайком пробираются в город и готовят спасательную операцию. Сработает ли план? Погибнет ли кто в процессе? Пойдет ли что-то не так? Почитайте, посходите с ума, как это делала я.

Я тут обмолвилась, что Лия и Рэйф влюбленные. Так и есть. Ребята поговорили и пришли к выводу, что оба были хороши и злиться друг на друга бессмысленно.

- Да, я не фермер, но надеюсь, ты снова сможешь меня полюбить – как принца на этот раз. Постепенно, не торопясь. Пусть начали мы не очень, но счастливый финал по-прежнему достижим.

А кто спорит. Я – нет. Ах да, Кейден спорит (и обзывает Рэйфа придворной конфеткой!). Хотите знать, как поживает треугольник? Адекватно. Кейден любит Лию, Лия Любит Рэйфа, Рэйф любит Лию. Да, девчонке приходится изображать то, чего нет, по отношению к ассасину, но чего только не сделаешь, чтобы остаться в живых и защитить любимого человека. Нет, она не конченая стерва, Кейден ей даже нравится, но это не любовь (по крайней мере, пока, и в будущем, надеюсь, тоже). Я рада, что Лия не мечется, не ведет себя как собака на сене (а сена у нее ого-го), она остается верна себе и своим чувствам. Я всецело за Рэю (или как шипперы назвали эту пару?).

Кейден априори ставил Венду превыше всего, а для Рэйфа в приоритете Лия.

«Это того стоило, Лия. Каждая миля и каждый день. Я бы снова так поступил. Я пересек бы и три континента, только бы быть с тобой».

И еще:

«Ты все, что мне нужно. Помни об этом. Я люблю тебя, Лия. И дело вовсе не в титуле. Не в бумажке, что я подписал. Просто люблю и все».

Хочу отметить героев второстепенных. У Пирсон их море, и при этом каждый, каким бы незначительным не казался – личность со своей историей, характером и судьбой. Три королевства, три правды, но всем веришь и каждому сочувствуешь. Разве что о Далбреке известно немного, но, как мне кажется, туда мы отправимся в заключительной части трилогии.

Об интригах и сюжетных твистах без спойлеров не поведать, но поверьте, сюжет многослоен, не зациклен на личной драме или романе, а касается всего и вся. Финал потрясающий. Если бы я грызла ногти – я бы сгрызла и руки (а, может, даже и ноги).

Третья часть выйдет в только 2016 году (дата пока не известна), называться будет «Красотой тьмы» (жутковато), жду не могу.

+ Спойлерное бла-бла-бла...

Ребят, у Кейдена дар! Ну прям как у Лии. Он заявил, что видел ее в Венде спустя несколько лет, а еще у него на руках был ребенок. О.о Я соглашусь на счастье этой парочки только через труп Рэйфа. Живым и одиноким оставлять его просто кощунство после всего пережитого им и Лией. Быть может, ребенок вообще Полин, быть может, она будет жить с ним, а Лия просто приедет в гости. Короче, жесть. Пока что предпосылок ноль. Но, думаю, Кейден отпустил Лию с Рэйфом не только потому, что в Венде ее бы прибили, а еще потому, что в глубине души он типа знает, что в будущем она достанется ему.
