Have you ever think what happened with Wonderland after Alice left it? They say her tales inspired Lewis Carroll to create such a book, but what if she wasn’t completely honest? What if she hid or forgot something and what if her family's cursed by the infamous Red Queen?

Alyssa’s mother is in an asylum, her grandmother tried to fly and now she’s dead, she herself hears bug’s and flower’s talks. Seems like madness is here. But not so fast, guys. This is a retelling. Of course, Wonderland is real and, of course, Alyssa’s not crazy. Just like her siblings.

She will find a rabbit hole, she will come to Wonderland and not alone. Her old friend and old crush Jeb will go with her. How can I describe this guy?

“Poor control-freak Jeb. Your world’s way off-kilter when little Alyssa’s not tripping over her chastity belt. Is that it, bad boy?”

Okay, that’s not me, I stole Alyssa’s words, I can't tell you why she was that harsh with her ~~stupid~~ beloved Jeb, you'll find it our yourself. But she was right! Overprotective and possessive guy this Jeb is. And you know what? Jeb has a rich girlfriend with whom he was ready to fly to London. He doesn’t love her, but her dad’s gonna rent them a flat. Smells like a young gigolo. He, of course, wants to be with Alyssa, but he doesn't want her to be burden with his dark past she already knows about, 'cause she went through it with him. Lame excuse. But when Alyssa got her portion of adventures, he’s suddenly decided to show his cards. Why? Maybe was scared that would lose her to Morpheus. Well, boy, don’t you hear this sound? This is a train, which is leaving right now. You’re late!

Who’s Morpheus? Remember Caterpillar from the original Alice in Wonderland? Let’s say that these creatures have something in common. I mean, he IS that Caterpillar but after metamorphose into a cocoon that lasting for 75 years. He became Fae. Seductive, smart, cunning, sexy, yummy… do I have to go on?

“He’s a contradiction: taut magic coiled to strike, gentleness at war with severity, a tongue as sharp as a whip’s edge, yet skin so soft he could be swathed in clouds.”

Morpheus is ageless and can wear any look he wants to. That’s how he could be close to Alyssa when she was little. He pretended to be a boy and played with her within dreams. Some could call him a perv. I wouldn’t. Maybe a bit… Now Alyssa is old enough for him to show himself as he is. So he did.

He’s tall, lean, has blue hair until his shoulders, black eyes, and wings, loves fancy clothes and hats. He’s a gentleman but he always knows how to make you blush.

Alyssa’s strangely gravitates to him, but there is Jeb who would always spoil every bit of fun. BTW, it’s Morpheus, who’s called for Alyssa to come to Wonderland. He wants to help her to break the curse. And maybe something more… and even more (c’mon, it’s Wonderland, we make up words here).

“Morpheus leans close. His hair brushes my exposed shoulder, tickling and soft. “Shy little blossom,” he whispers, his sweet breath cloaking me. “We’re simply going to meld your pain away.”
Meld … that doesn’t sound like something my dad would approve of.”

Alyssa has to accomplish some tasks, it’s not too hard but not too easy as well. Moreover, Wonderland’s inhabitants – netherlings – aren’t that cute as they were in the book. White Rabbit is a skeleton with antlers, his name is Rabid; there are flower-mutants, spider-sisters, little naked sprites (okay, they are cute), faceless Hatter, and so on.

But something is off. Morpheus definitely has his own agenda.

“Some perv lured you here via a magical website?”

Exactly. Do you still think he did it for your sake only?

For a while, the events were a mess, craaazy mess. I couldn’t get anything. I wasn’t that interested in the plot. But the ending gave me the answers! Even the weirdest things became clear and understandable. And the book did shine. But you know, if it wouldn’t happen I’d love it all the same because of Morpheus.

“I hate you."
"Only because of the way I make you feel."
My fingernails eat into my palms. "Only because you bring out the worst in me."
"Oh no, luv. I bring out the life in you.”

He brought some life in me too.

By the by, there's a love-triangle. I thought you already got it but, just in case, I decided to open your eyes. Jeb loves Alyssa, Alyssa loves Jeb, but before Jeb she had a child affection toward Morpheus, and now she feels it too, but this time she’s a young lady not a girl and her feelings are different and more intense. What about Morpheus? Does he love Alyssa? With him, you can never be sure about anything.

Have I mentioned that this book is funny?

“Ungrateful little twit.” The egg-man scowls at me. “Looking a gift spider in the fangs. See if you’re invited to tea again.”

Splintered indeed could be a standalone book. Its ending is complete and satisfying, but I’m happy that there are two more books in line for me. Yay!

Аннотация

Идею Страны чудес Льюису Кэрроллу подала юная фантазерка, в честь которой он и назвал свою героиню. А вдруг она говорила правду, немножечко привирая? И что если Элис (а в нашем случае девочку звать Элис) и весь ее род обречены на безумие, а виной тому Красная королева?

Вполне возможно. Иначе как еще объяснить прыжок Алисии из окна или психоз Элисон, или то, что ее дочь слышит жучков и цветочки плюс понимает их речь? Над мужчинами рода Лидделл это проклятье не властно, а дамам не повезло: еще ни одна не избежала дурки. Алиса боится, что вскоре отправится вслед за своей матерью. Оснований на то достаточно.

А если разрушить проклятье? Придется найти нору, придется спуститься вниз, уменьшиться, увеличиться, встретить уйму странных созданий, чуть не умереть… Пойдет на такое Алиса? О, даже поедет.

Да не одна. С ней потащится Джеб – старый друг, по которому Эл сохнет уже шесть лет. Как бы его описать…

— Неуправляемый Джеб. Места себе не находишь, когда на малышке Алисе нет пояса верности? Так ведь, плохиш?

Слова не мои, но Алиса права (почему она так сказанула о своем ~~дебильном~~ любимчике, я не скажу, узнаете сами; главное факт остается фактом) Джеб – собственник, не дающий Алисе и шагу ступить. Не трогай то, не делай сё, не смотри туда, ни говори с тем-то. При этом у Джеба имеется девушка! И это не Эл, а Тейлор, с которой он собирался уехать в Лондон (отец девчонки при деньгах, он снял бы им там квартиру, и наш художник, а он художник, богемил бы напропалую). Жиголовато, да? А стоило Алисе отхватить свою порцию приключений – потащился следом и мигом решил признаться в нежнейших чувствах, ведь он давно любил Элушку на расстоянии, но не хотел напрягать своим мрачным прошлым. И ничё, что Элушка с ним росла, все видела и помогала двигаться дальше. Фиговый такой отмаз. Лично я ставлю на Морфея, к которому Джеб приревновал. И неспроста.

«Он – сама противоречивость: магия тугая как пружина, готовая больно ударить; нежность, воюющая с жестокостью; острый как бритва язык, а кожа мягкая, словно обернута облаками».

Помните мудрую сороконожку? У нее с Морфеем немало общего. Вообще-то, она – это он спустя 75 лет, проведенных в коконе; хитрый, смышленый, соблазнительный и сексуальный фейри. Половина Страны чудес однозначно валялась с ним на сеновале.

Морфей бессмертен и вечно юн. Он может выглядеть как пожелает. Когда Алиса была маленькой, он обращался мальчиком и играл с ней во сне (извращенец этакий). Теперь она подросла и скрывать ему больше нечего.

Он высок, атлетичен, синешевелюр, чернокрыл и –глаз, стильно одевается и обожает шляпы. Джентльмен, способный вогнать тебя в краску одним лишь взглядом.

Естественно, Джеб забеспокоился. И поделом. Слышите этот гудок? Похоже, поезд «Алиса» как раз отходит.

— Какой-то извращенец заманил тебя сюда с помощью волшебного сайта?

Практически так и было. А еще он хочет помочь Алисе освободить семью и себя от проклятия. Девчонке предстоит повстречаться с нэвэлингами – обитателями Страны чудес – и пройти ряд испытаний (море осушить, к паучихам в гости сгонять и тому подобное). Кстати, местные вовсе не те, какими их всем обрисовал Кэрролл. Кролик – скелетоподобное нечто с оленьими рогами и красными глазками. Безумный Шляпник – безликое создание, в буквальном смысле безликое. Цветочки – мутанты на ножках. Весело будет Алисе.

К тому же что-то не так. Морфей явно что-то скрывает. Каковы же его мотивы?

Поначалу сюжет откровенно бещщеный. Я ни въехать в него, ни увлечься им не могла. Читала исключительно ради Морфея.

— Терпеть тебя не могу.
— Лишь из-за чувств, что я в тебе пробуждаю.
— Ты пробуждаешь худшее во мне.
— Ох нет, малышка. Я пробуждаю в тебе жизнь.

И во мне! И во мне жизнь.

Плюс финал расставил всё по местам! Объяснил даже то, на что я изначально закрыла глаза. А еще мне нравятся многослойные концовки, когда думаешь: нихренасе, ну ок… А оно раз и новым сюрпризом по голове.

К тому же книга забавная.

— Дурочка неблагодарная, — нахмурилось Яйцо. — Дареной паучихе в челюсти не смотрят! Поглядим, кто тебя теперь на чай позовет.

А ложкой дегтя стал ненавистный траянгл. Я думаю, вы уже догадались об этом, но все-таки поясню: Джеб любит Алису, Алиса Джеба, но еще до него она привязалась к Морфею, теперь же детские чувства стали острее и взрослее. А что же насчет Морфея? Как относится к Алисе он? С ним ни в чем нельзя быть уверенной!
