Review

I promised not to mention all these Russian-like words in Grisha but you have to remember: I LOL and hard deep inside my Russian soul (okay, I lied, I LOL and hard without any shame, openly)) every time I think about Ana Kuya, kvas in the role of whiskey, Sankt Petyr of Brevno, otkazat’sya as an abandoned, and so on.

Now I'm gonna tell you about the book I'd been delaying for months, for a year, TBQH, and finally have read. The story has its flaws and even clichés but they aren't a big deal. Like at all.

Shadow and Bone is a story about an orphan Alina Starkov(a) who was a mere commoner since birth and then BOOM she’s a Sun Summoner. Alina lives in Ravka (which reminds me about dog’s bow-wow: rrrahv-rrrrahv!), the kingdom splinted for two territories, thanks to the Shadow Fold, a lightless space with terrible volcras who would eat you alive and then ask for more. Where this Fold came from? Oh, this a Darkling’s handmade. The first’s of them. Who are the Darklings? The most powerful men in Ravka and maybe outside it too. When a Darkling is dead (they have a very long life), another one takes his place to lead The Second Army, which is Grisha. And Grisha is a talented man and woman who can manipulate elements and stuff. The Fold is dangerous, the first of Darklings was a fool to create such a thing and his descendants were eager to fix his mistake by destroying the Fold and reunite the kingdom's parts. Alina’s gift can help with this mission and the Darkling won’t let her be until everything is done. Should I say that he looks young (despite his age) and very handsome? Should I add that he is a pure sexiness, huh? Alina’s happy to serve him. At least at first…

BTW, the girl has an orphan-friend Mal, and a crush on him. So the story won’t leave him aside. Yes, this is exactly what you think. A love-triangle. But, nope, not exactly. This is a triangle but not love- one. And Shadow and Bone is a good book anyway, with its twists and rolls and rock’n’rolls. The way characters behave reminds me of Red Queen's court-intrigues. Anyone can betray anyone. This quote suits this story as well.

I liked the Darkling from the very first sight. I heard that he’s evil and he was not. Well, he ripped a man in two, but the man was a bad assassin, it didn't count. The Darkling was nice, gentle, and full of patience for Alina, so I was melting while keeping in mind: I need to see his dark side (or his naked side… or both). When he finally showed me not naked but a truly dark side of his, I was in awe. Such a cunning bastard this Darkling is! I lllllove it.

Now (I’m spoiled about the ending of the series, not about every detail, but the Darklings’ fate is known) I see why he’ll get what he’ll get. There’s no way for him to be out of the shit is going on and have his HEA. *crying*

I prefer him over Mal because of his complex and multiply personality. He’s a villain but he has his reasons and feelings. And Mal is simply a good guy. What’s interesting about being a hero like that? I understand with my mind that he’s loyal, brave and a good friend, that he cares about Alina, maybe even loves her. But I don’t care. My heart aches for another guy, thorny and tricky. Mal and Alina’s journey didn’t bring me to love their paring, sorry. Their friendship is nice while their love isn't. I know how bad the Darkling is but he's a thing, a riddle, a man. While Mal is a boy and has just one way to shine. But I have to admit that his behavior in the Fold when he thought he will die, touched me. I cried a little. It was powerful.

Alina is a bit annoying with some stupid decisions of hers. BUT. She's a young girl with great responsibility. She can be stupid and has a right to make mistakes. I sympathize with her. So far, she seems a great protagonist. Alina isn’t super beautiful or smart, she has power but can’t use it right until she’d learn how to. Not Mary Sue! And her voice is enjoyable.

Grisha’s concept is not new but has its charm. I liked its secondary characters, they have backgrounds, flaws, strengths, they aren’t just names, they are real persons. Genya, Ivan, even David whom we saw at a few pages only… I wasn’t bored with them.

What I think about future events? We’ll have to see both tsareviches, I guess. The Darkling would come out of the Fold, of course. I heard that romantic lines would be sexier and steamier and I can’t wait to read and to live through this. I need more the Darkling and Alina’s interactions. And super fights. I need bitterness and sweetness. Leigh knows how to make me feel. And I will let her do it again.

BTW, what about Darkling’s feelings for Alina? Is there anything? Is it just a desire? He’s definitely jealous of her relationship with Mal but what makes him act like that? I’m eager to find out.

My only complaint is hygiene. I need my heroes to be clean and fresh! Leigh has to mention banya or bath more often. Or my imagination will go in a wrong and smelly direction.

The end. I wanted to say more but I need to read the sequel right NOW.

Рецензия

Узнала я о «Грише» давно. Откладывала серию год. Меня смущали опричники с копралками, Аной Куёй, Ильей Морозовой, Алиной Старков, квасом в роли вискаря, Св. Петром из Бревна и прочие типа русские прелести. Оказалось, не так страшен черт, как его малюют. Ржала я знатно, но увлечься историей это не помешало.

Сирота Алина Старкова (я буду звать ее Старковой) была самой обычной девочкой, пока однажды, в момент опасности, не произвела фурор и не оказалась Гришей.

Гриши – равчане, способные манипулировать стихиями и элементами (разжечь пламя, призвать ветер, соткать бронежилет из стали и так далее), у каждого из них своя специализация: лекари не могут управлять водой, а тот, кто имеет власть над сердцами (буквальную власть над буквальными сердцами), не в силах призвать солнце. Если честно, призвать солнце не может вообще никто. Кроме Алины. В среде Гриш есть довольно уникальные способности, но таковых немного. И ни один Гриша (а я предупреждала не ржать? нет? ну так вот… нинадааа) – ни заурядный, ни выдающийся – не скроется от взора Дарклина.

Дарклины рулят Второй армией, сформированной из одаренных равчан, и обладают огромной силой, на фоне которой живут веками. Умирает один Дарклин – на смену приходит другой, черноволосый и сероглазый, неизменно привлекательный и опасный. Самый первый из этой братии настолько увлекся погоней за властью, что вылилось это в Темную пустошь – бесплодную территорию, покрытую мраком и населенную кровожадными волькрами. Пустошь разделила Равку пополам, отрезав столицу от выхода в море. Равке угрожают соседние государства, и такая фигня с разделенной страной препятствует эффективной защите от врагов (плюс еще миллион минусов). Последующие Дарклины пытались исправить ошибку предка, воссоединить королевство и вернуть мир на земли Равки. Нынешний мистер Ди вообще поначалу кажется няшкой (разорвать пополам злого ассасина – это типа самозащита и нищитовоаще). Но помните, Дарклины не просто так Дарклинами зовутся.

У главной героини в наличии друг из сиротского приюта князя Керамзова – Мэл Орецев. Они оба вступили в Первую армию: он в качестве охотника, она – картографа. Алина давненько сохнет по Мэлу, а тот тусит с другими девчонками и допетривает, что давняя подружка ему дорога, тогда, когда уже вроде бы поздно. Да, здесь будет любовный треугольник, но фишка в том, что он не совсем любовный и не совсем типичный.

Читали «Алую королеву» Авеярд? Помните фразу о том, что любой может стать предателем и любого могут предать? К этой книге сие относится тоже. Бдите.

Алина попадет во дворец, обретет новых друзей и врагов, а затем будет клевый твист. Мне по душе голос нашей ГГ и ее характер. Никакого мэрисьюизма, ребята. Да, у нее суперспособность, но иметь дар – одно, а пользоваться им как надо – совсем другое. Она не первая красотка на деревне, не вундеркинд, не самая и не лучшая. Алина тупит и ошибается. И с одной стороны, это бесит, а с другой – все нормально: имеет право, в конце концов.

Дарклин нравится мне больше Мэла. Он зрелый, таинственный, неоднозначный, в то время как Мэл типично-положительный бой, верный друг, смелый солдат, самоотверженный влюбленный… Но не ёкает у меня. Ему с Алиной довелось многое пережить – я улыбалась, утирала слезки (особенно в финале), но тянулась к тому, кто как бэ ни в какие ворота.

Посмотрим, что будет дальше. Я, к сожалению, случайно узнала значительную деталь финала трилогии, но начинка от этого менее вкусной не стала.

Кстати, обычно авторы применяют такой прием: показывают мудака, а потом обеляют его всякими оправдашками. Ли поступила наоборот: вот там заботливый перец, а потом - хренакс - вот вам его труфейс. А читатели уже влюбились, между прочим!

Готовьтесь к элементам Царской России, очень смешным вплетениям нашего языка и культуры в историю (не просто смешным - нелепым!) и к тому, что у Ли приятный язык. Я успела прочитать еще одно ее произведение – небольшую сказку – и теперь просто уверена, пишет Бардуго классно.
