Summary

Beware the goblin men and the wares they sell.

All her life, nineteen-year-old Liesl has heard tales of the beautiful, mysterious Goblin King. He is the Lord of Mischief, the Ruler Underground, and the muse around which her music is composed. Yet, as Liesl helps shoulder the burden of running her family’s inn, her dreams of composition and childish fancies about the Goblin King must be set aside in favor of more practical concerns.

But when her sister Käthe is taken by the goblins, Liesl journeys to their realm to rescue her sister and return her to the world above. The Goblin King agrees to let Käthe go—for a price. The life of a maiden must be given to the land, in accordance with the old laws. A life for a life, he says. Without sacrifice, nothing good can grow. Without death, there can be no rebirth. In exchange for her sister’s freedom, Liesl offers her hand in marriage to the Goblin King. He accepts.

Down in the Underground, Liesl discovers that the Goblin King still inspires her—musically, physically, emotionally. Yet even as her talent blossoms, Liesl’s life is slowly fading away, the price she paid for becoming the Goblin King’s bride. As the two of them grow closer, they must learn just what it is they are each willing to sacrifice: her life, her music, or the end of the world.

Review

Since the book will come out only in a few months, I won't tell you much. But I'll try to get you some clues.

Wintersong is...
A wild, untamed sort of music.

A very specific one.

This is a story about a girl with a dick of a father whose disdain forced her talent into hiding and about a man who wanted to set it free. It's also about balance, giving and taking, all the sorts of sacrifices and all the shades of love.

S. Jae-Jones really knows how to create a melody of a book with a dark atmosphere and a sensual veil. She's brave and interesting, her voice is not only filled with a sound, but with a taste too. I wish more author were genies and improvisers like S. Jae-Jones instead of being copyists and followers like 90% of nowadays writers.

Funny thing is, I didn't fall in love with this book. But you don't have to worship Mozart to admit that he's more than a simple composer. Wintersong is something like that. It may leave your heart in your chest, but it would play on your heartstrings and not in a gentle manner. Not every book is able to get not only under your skin, but deeper. Too bad, the hands of this one were callused and cold.

Wintersong is lyrical and poetic, but monotonous when it comes to metaphors. The story is infiltrated by music terms and stuff. It's beautiful, neat, accurate, but too much. It's not balanced with anything else, thus soon it get's old and its magic turns out into a mess of sounds and notes. Sometimes I had to re-read a passage or two to grasp the line between different scenes, 'cause everything in this book is told through the same stuff.

I loved the setting. I can't remember me reading something about Germany and its natives in resent YAs which isn't about WWII. I also applaud to the mythology part. S. Jae-Jones made up not only a present story, but a history of the world she put her characters in.

I'm impressed (but not happy) with the family problems' portrait in Wintersong, which is honest and thus painful. We see how lust may be mistook for love, how distant but close can be siblings, how unequal admiration for children scar them for life, how time brings us together and tears us apart, but we don't stop being related with our beloved.

But I hate how insecure and self-effacement was Liesl, our MC. She couldn't stop repeating how plain she was by contrast with her young sister who was only a plump version of poor Liesl, but was used to steal all the attention. Okay, being uncertain and live in a someone's shadow is one thing, but that's personal issue which has nothing to do with other people's judgement. But everyone in this book was agreed with MC. They called her unlovely and such, but mentioned her inner beauty. Um, well. Isn't beauty a very relative thing? How one person can be appealing or unattractive to everyone? What about different opinions and visions? I don't know, 'cause Leisl considered herself ugly and no one said otherwise. To be honest, this details poisoned many potentially good scenes.

Another annoying thing was inconsistency on the verge of illogic. Some things did happen without a reason, only to show us readers they actually can happen. Some things did happen despite the fact they couldn't or were forbidden. And some things didn't happen at all for the sake of the plot and a future companion novel. I also don't like when authors go wild and bold, but after a while changed their mind and rebuild everything they destroyed. It depreciate the feeling and tears I had while the plot-carnage.

The King's and Elisabeth's romance was nicely developed (with hotness and pain and depth), but I'm not really fond of those ships when a girl has to beg and does beg for sex. It's not like Liesl was a mere initiator of some intimate interactions, it's the case when a man refused to touch her and she refused to let him be.

Wintersong is dark, as I already said, but this darkness is too full. You will find here no humor, nor even sarcasm. If a half of the whining might be replaced with a witty banter, I'd be way more pleased. I'm not afraid of purely painful reads, I just don't believe in a life without laugh. MCs has moments of joy, but they were not light, but hysterical.

And still, no matter the cons I mentioned above, this book is worth of your time. It's mature, meaningful, and complex. Wintersong is a new level of YA stories. A new type. A new interpenetration. It's not holding back, but doesn't become Maas-2016. It's flawed, but enchanting. And maybe its tune is somehow belonged to your heart.
“But the story doesn’t end there, does it?”
“The story has no end. It goes on and on and on and on unto eternity.”
