Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is a cyborg. She’s a second-class citizen with a mysterious past, reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister’s illness. But when her life becomes intertwined with the handsome Prince Kai’s, she suddenly finds herself at the center of an intergalactic struggle, and a forbidden attraction. Caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal, she must uncover secrets about her past in order to protect her world’s future.

Review

I had no experience in retellings and when I finally started this one there was a cyborg. As though I used to read about cyborgs, uh-huh. I thought I'd be overheated and put it down after several chapters, but on the very first pages, something special happened. Or rather someone. The Prince. I'm a girl, aren’t’ I? Princes are my thing. And then writing style snaps its fingers – pop – and you’re already at page number 100. The book is very easy to go through.

From the original “Cinderella” we’ve got a stepdaughter and a stepmother with two children, a prince, and a ball. A carriage became an old car, birds, and mousses transformed into an android, the glass slipper turned out to be a metal foot.

This book is not only a retelling but a dystopia too. The characters live in the future after World War IV, the planet is shared between six country-unions and they all are in peace with each other. There's only one problem. The plague. People die. The remedy doesn't exist.

The Moon is inhabited and its natives are called Lunars. They are pretty folk which able to manipulate your mind. Their queen isn’t that nice and sweet, rumor has it, she isn't pretty at all, but she wears an illusion over her body and face and would kill anyone who would dare to have doubt about her appearance. This woman daydreams to enslave the Earthen and her ticket to this dream-station is a marriage with Kaito, the Prince (you wish, moon bitch). Kai doesn’t want to become her husband, but she can start a new war if he would refuse her.

Let’s go back to our Cinder. She’s a cyborg and this is an unusual thing for me. It’s hard to relate to such a heroine. MC is cool, she’s snarky and self-mocking (as well as the Prince, that’s why I liked them both). Cinder is pretty, some parts of her made of iron and her body contain a few cords, but who cares, right? RIGHT?

The plot is pretty too, I mean pretty predictable (we all know how what to expect from "Cinderella") but enjoyable at the same time. I already peeked at the second book and have to say the story becomes better, if every next book would beat its predecessor, “Winter” which is expected near to the end of this year, would probably blow my mind. This is a rare case when the prequels are better than the first book, and this is a good tendency.

Congratulations to retellings and cyborgs! We finally met each other. Retelling is cool, with cyborgs we are at the rose and candy relationship-stage so far. I'm curious what's next...
