Summary

This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do.

This afternoon, her planet was invaded.

The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.

But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet's AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it's clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she'd never speak to again.

Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.

Review

Last year I DNFed the book around 40% because of incredible boredom. This year I've read it all with quiet interest. Miracles happen.

We're in the future, in those times when space is ours and we can 'jump' between galaxies. At first, we're on a little planet Kerenza somewhere who knows where and suddenly we're under attack. Three ships are ready to take refugees, to fight back the BeiTeck (bad guys who decided to destroy the entire planet only to cover their asses and hide some truths), to reach authorities and spread the word. The problem is, one of the enemy ships is still OK and determined to catch up with Hypatia, Alexander, and Copernicus. Well, that's not the only problem of poor civilians and as much poor UTA marines. There's also A.I.D.A.N. or simply AIDAN, local artificial intelligence which went a little bit crazy but still wants to protect the fleet (no matter the cost). But we're still not done with the shit. We also have a virus that drives people mad and forces them to kill each other. What a pretty ride do we have!

There a lot of POVs, but our stars are Kady, Ezra, and AIDAN. I'd name only Kady and Ezra, but AIDAN is so unpredictable... better not to cross him, okay? Two love birds ended up on two different ships. Ex-love birds. The couple broke up right before the attack on Kerenza. Nice timing. But after almost losing their lives and really losing their families, friends, and acquaintances, Ezra and Kady decide to forget all their reasons to be angry with each other and find a way to a) survive, b) live happily ever after. Of course, that's not simple. And you'll how much it is not.

Here's what you need to know about Illuminae:

  • It is epistolary. Not everyone likes such a format. I myself am not a fan, but I adjusted and even started to enjoy it. Especially I adored the effect of floating lines on those moments when gravitation was off.
  • It's a rather action-packed story than anything else. I missed some depth in the characters, thus I didn't mind to kill 'em all and cry for a while after that.
  • AIDAN is a weird AI with philosophical shit in its wares. But he (I don't know why, but it's him for me) is strangely charming.
  • You're up for some creepy scenes and little zombie apocalypses.
  • There are real sci-fi features or it's me and my amateur (in the science's case) brain. But I needed more explanations and more details about the future our characters live in.
  • The story is kinda chaotic. That's understandable, giving the plot, but the after-feelings reminds me of a feast's consequences. You swallow too much of everything and your stomach is not very pleased.
  • The writing is oversnarky. Snark's everywhere. Even AI would learn how to sarcasm his opponents down.
  • We deal with Mary Sue and Marty Stu. Or with the two luckiest teens in the universe. It's one thing to be good at something, and the other to be the best among thousands of people, considering your lack of proper training or education.
  • The pacing gets better after 35%. Many people give up at this point. Been there.
  • The book is not about nothing. I did love some interesting thoughts about humanity

All in all, I'm glad I decided to give Illuminae the second chance. Now I'm definitely ready for Gemina to come out.

(A.I.D.A.N. aka ЭЙДАН), намеренный защитить флот любой ценой (пусть даже ценой жизни своих «пассажиров»).
