Summary

In the three kingdoms of Mytica, magic has long been forgotten. And while hard-won peace has reigned for centuries, a deadly unrest now simmers below the surface.

As the rulers of each kingdom grapple for power, the lives of their subjects are brutally transformed... and four key players, royals and rebels alike, find their fates forever intertwined. Cleo, Jonas, Lucia, and Magnus are caught in a dizzying world of treacherous betrayals, shocking murders, secret alliances, and even unforeseen love.

The only outcome that's certain is that kingdoms will fall. Who will emerge triumphant when all they know has collapsed?

It's the eve of war... Choose your side.

Princess: Raised in pampered luxury, Cleo must now embark on a rough and treacherous journey into enemy territory in search of magic long thought extinct.

Rebel: Jonas, enraged at injustice, lashes out against the forces of oppression that have kept his country cruelly impoverished. To his shock, he finds himself the leader of a people's revolution centuries in the making.

Sorceress: Lucia, adopted at birth into the royal family, discovers the truth about her past—and the supernatural legacy she is destined to wield.

Heir: Bred for aggression and trained to conquer, firstborn son Magnus begins to realize that the heart can be more lethal than the sword...

Review

*Minor spoilers ahead*

Okay, remember me saying that maybe this book isn't so bad? I changed my mind. It's really bad for my liking. The more I think about the characters, plot, and writing (I've read FK in the Russian translation, but I checked the original too), the angrier I get.

We have a very generic world-building: three kingdoms, one of which is rich and prosperous, while the other two are a step away from starvation. The reasons for this situation are very illogical and weird. Maybe the author thought that her readers wouldn't give a damn about something like that, being distracted by a perv Magnus or a whiny meh Jonas? I don't know. But that obviously didn't work.

Take a look at the characters:

Cleo, a stupid-stupid princess whose damaged mind started a war and fucked up a chance to save her sibling's life. She's pretty like an angel and everyone wants her, but she's promised to an alcoholic lord whom her father considers a decent man. Oh, if only the chick could open his eyes at the fiancee's true nature... But wait! She's a princess and her word would always beat his. So why didn't she tell anything? He blackmailed this poor maiden! With news about the absence of her maidenhood. How ironic is it, eh? And it's yet one more evidence of Cleo's idiocy. She could lie and no one would be able to prove a negative. But she let the man scare her into betrothal. Congratulations. What can I say more? Her sister had more brain cells. Such a shame she was out of the picture for 99% of the book. And the king. I guess, his younger daughter's right back at his, 'cause his actions and decisions lacked even basic logic.

Lucia, a special snowflake with rare powers and great destiny, of course. Magnus's sister as interesting as a rock in a ditch. But the author made her beautiful (just like anyone else of her characters), she could just sit around (so she did) and be cherished and loved anyway. Next to the end, she becomes a living weapon. Brainless, dangerous, and lame. So lame I can't even... Remember Bella Swan? Compared to Lucia she's been an awesome female protagonist, I swear.

Magnus, a supposed-to-be-mysterious-and-sexy prince who turned out to be a moody perv. He's in love with his sister who's not his sister but he doesn't know about it, so let's call him a creep, okay? Well, this creep does nothing except but mooning around his young sibling and glaring at everyone else. He also kills people (a little) and pretends to be James Bond (much). His father is cruel, so we all have to pity the poor perv. Sorry, but no.

Jonas, a brother of a killed by Cleo's fiancee man who wants to avenge his family's misery but ends up being charmed by the stupid princess and fooled by his war-allies. First of all, this idiot can't read faces. Like at all. When his brother was killed, Cleo almost fainted, aghast by the scene. Jonas's memory: the pretty rich bitch was laughing and cheering and dancing the lambada, she must die for her glee. She must die for her stupidity, yes. But you, my dear, must die for yours too.

Ioannes, a guy from some kind of local paradise which is kinda ruining without a few important crystals or something like that. He's watching Lucia and keeping secrets from his kin. The most unnecessary POV of the book.

All these people will meet at some point. But their interactions won't kill the boredom. Alas.

I won't describe to you others from this party-hard. They all have the same shade of flatness, so my review will soon grow very monotonous.

The plot is far-fetched in every detail and turn. It's not the characters who try to find a way out of different situations, it's the author who manipulates the picture by putting her heroes right where she needs them to be and then to play with them as if they are just toy-solders. Plus Morgan Rhodes forgets to make sense. The events she writes about fall out of the place or looks like a hastily sewn thing.

There is too much telling and little showing. Quite everything that is happening in the book we learn from somebody's words and see nothing with our own eyes. Seems like the story's going on outside the book while we readers see only reports and such. It's not a good way to engage your auditory. It's not the way to paint a world with your words and breathe life into your characters. But it's a way to gain 1 star from me. So, yay, one goal is certainty reached.

PS: I already have the second book's hardback, so I'll give this series a chance to improve... somehow... someday. But I won't recommend it. Never. If you missed this train in 2012, make a peace with it and go on.
